Inverter vs non-inverter
An inverter ramps its compressor up and down to hold temperature instead of switching hard on and off. It costs more up front, uses noticeably less power, and is far quieter. We install inverter units almost exclusively.
Supply and installation of inverter reverse cycle split systems across Melbourne's eastern suburbs. One room or the whole house, room by room — sized properly, installed neatly, finished the same day.
Split system air conditioning installation in Melbourne is the default for good reason. You get reverse cycle heating and cooling in the room you actually use, for a fraction of the cost of a whole-house system, and a modern inverter unit is quiet enough that you forget it is running.
Melbourne's climate plays to the strengths of reverse cycle. Our winters are cool but rarely brutal, which is exactly where a heat pump is at its most efficient — delivering roughly three to five units of heat for every unit of electricity. That makes a split system one of the cheapest ways to heat a Melbourne room, not just cool it.
We supply the unit and install it with our own licensed team — you are not buying a box from a retailer and hunting for an installer. Every split system supply and install includes:

Three things worth understanding before you compare quotes.

Compare the zoned energy rating label, not just the headline stars. In Melbourne you care about the heating rating for the cool zone as much as the cooling rating — you will use heating more hours of the year.
Check the outdoor sound power level if the unit sits near a bedroom or boundary. A few decibels is the difference between unnoticeable and a standing complaint.
| Split system | Cassette | |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor unit | High wall head | Recessed in the ceiling |
| Outdoor units | One per indoor head | One per cassette |
| Airflow | One direction | Four-way |
| Ceiling access needed | No | Yes |
| Typical install time | 4–6 hours | About a day |
| Relative cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Bedrooms and single living areas | Large open-plan rooms, shops and offices |
Every installation is carried out by licensed tradespeople and certified to Australian standards.

Efficient timely and expert installation of our Mitsubishi split system. So much better for health and pocket than cumbersome gas ducted heating. Thankyou

Price is driven by capacity and by how hard the install is, not just by the box. A back-to-back installation — indoor head directly opposite the outdoor unit, short pipe run, ground-floor access, spare capacity in the switchboard — is the cheapest scenario. Costs climb with larger capacity, longer or concealed pipe runs, upper-storey work, switchboard upgrades and render or brick make-good. We give you a fixed written price after a free site assessment rather than a range that will not match your house.
As a rough guide, 2.5 kW suits a bedroom up to about 20 m², 3.5 kW a larger bedroom or small lounge, and 5–6 kW an open-plan living and kitchen area of 30–45 m². But floor area alone is misleading. High or raked ceilings, large west-facing windows, poor insulation, an open stairwell or a room that flows into another all push the requirement up. We calculate capacity properly on site so you are not sold more — or less — than you need.
For most Melbourne households, yes. A reverse cycle split system is a heat pump: it moves heat rather than burning fuel to create it, so it delivers roughly three to five units of heat per unit of electricity. Gas heating cannot exceed one. The gap widens further if you have solar. Paired with good sizing and sensible use, a modern inverter split is one of the lowest-cost ways to heat a room in Melbourne.
Four to six hours for a standard single-head installation, and we normally have you running the same day. Add time for second-storey access, long or concealed pipe runs, a switchboard upgrade, or brick and render make-good. We confirm the expected duration on the quote and tell you if anything on site changes it.
A reverse cycle split system does both, and that is what we install as standard. Cooling-only units exist and are marginally cheaper, but they are a false economy in Melbourne — you would be buying a machine that sits idle for the two-thirds of the year when you actually want heat.
Modern inverter units are quiet. Indoor heads typically run around 19–40 dB(A) depending on fan speed — the lowest settings are close to a library. The outdoor condenser is the one to think about, because it runs at night and it faces your neighbours. Placement matters as much as the rating: we keep condensers away from bedroom windows and boundaries wherever the pipe run allows, and we can quote a quieter model if the location is sensitive.
Clean the filters yourself every one to three months during heavy use — it takes five minutes and it is the single biggest thing you can do for efficiency and air quality. Beyond that, a professional clean and sanitise every one to two years washes the coil, fan barrel and drain tray and kills the mould and bacteria a filter clean never reaches.
No. In Australia it is illegal to handle refrigerant without an Australian Refrigeration Council licence, and the electrical connection must be carried out and certified by a registered electrical contractor. Beyond the legal position, a self-installed system that has not been properly pressure-tested and evacuated will run inefficiently, fail early and void its warranty.
